Embracing a New Chapter: The South African Experience in Austria
Ah, Austria. You beauty! Our new home sweet home.
Of course, it is not to be confused with Australia. Australia is where kangaroos roam, an entire continent in the southern hemisphere.
But Austria? It’s a whole different story. Picture-perfect alpine views, crystal-clear lakes, and that charming Austrian-German lilt – it’s a dreamy escape right in the heart of Europe. Here, tradition dances with modernity, with locals donning their finest for festivals and encounters with friendly strangers are commonplace, whether on trains, in stores or trekking up mountains. Austria is synonymous with culinary delights like the famed Wiener Schnitzel, indulgent Sacher-Torte, and the comforting aroma of fabulous coffee. Life here unfolds with a unique sense of comfort and cosiness, known locally as “gemütlichkeit.” That feeling of warmth and contentment seeps into every corner of life here.
Sure, there are moments of homesickness and the inevitable bumps in the road of settling into a new place, but Austria has a way of weaving its magic into your soul. From its bustling cities to its serene countryside, it’s a sanctuary for those craving a fulfilling and enriching lifestyle.
Being transplanted into the heart of Europe, I’ve discovered my own treasure trove of reasons why I love living in Austria. It isn’t just a place to live—it’s a place to thrive. So, let me share with you why I’ve fallen head over heels for life in Austria. Ready? Let’s dive in!
14 Reasons why I love living in Austria
1. Mountain Huts – A Taste of Alpine Hospitality
Tucked away amidst the breathtaking Austrian mountains, you’ll find alms or mountain huts – cosy havens for weary hikers and cyclists seeking a slice of traditional Alpine charm. It’s a scene from a postcard: hearty local fare, sweeping vistas, and a warm embrace of Austria’s mountain culture. And these rustic hideaways aren’t just for après-ski relaxation; they open their doors with open arms, beckoning outdoor adventurers to bask in their rustic charm. Some huts only swing open during the warmer months, catering to the influx of hikers and cyclists eager to explore the trails. Talk about turning a hike into a memorable adventure!
2. Breathtaking Landscapes: Nature’s Grandeur
Austria’s majestic mountains and tranquil lakeshores have truly captured my heart. The sheer grandeur of its landscapes is awe-inspiring. Coming from South Africa, where vast plains stretch before rugged mountains, Austria’s gentle hills and towering peaks wrap around you like a warm embrace, offering a sense of constant comfort. With each passing season, the scenery subtly transforms, showcasing nature’s timeless beauty in all its glory. Being surrounded by such enchanting landscapes feels like a blessing, a serene escape from the hustle and bustle of city life I once knew. Yet, now and then, I find myself yearning for it still. Though the allure of urban living lingers, the countryside is my sanctuary, my ultimate source of joy and contentment for now.
3. Drinking Water on Tap
Yes, yes. South Africa has safe drinking water, no doubt about it. But let me tell you about the water in Austria – it’s next level. It’s like taking a sip straight from a crisp mountain spring – chilly and incredibly refreshing! Trust me, it’s an experience like no other, and it speaks volumes about Austria’s dedication to keeping its environment clean and its people healthy.
4. Electricity – The Lights Are On, and Everyone’s Home
Let’s talk about Austria’s electricity supply for a moment. It’s a world away from the power struggles back in South Africa. There is no load shedding here, peeps. That means uninterrupted access to all the essentials, day in and day out. It’s easy to overlook how much of a game-changer that is until you’ve experienced the peace of mind it brings. We might not always realise it, but having a reliable power grid is a blessing, and we’re grateful for it.
5. Architecture & History: A Journey Through Time
Austria’s rich history is embedded deeply within the essence of its cities and towns. It’s not just written in the books. Wander through the cobblestone streets of Vienna or Salzburg, and you’ll feel like you’ve stepped into a time machine. Centuries-old buildings and majestic cathedrals stand tall, telling tales of days long gone. Every corner you turn, every ancient facade you pass, it’s like getting a glimpse into Austria’s cultural soul. I’ve lost count of the times I’ve found myself lost in thought while strolling through these historic streets, imagining what life was like centuries ago. If only you’re willing to listen, these old buildings are trying to share their stories with you—one of my favourite reasons I love living in Austria.
6. Public Transport. Efficient and Accessible
Regarding public transport, South Africa’s offerings were limited for me. Aside from the Gautrain, which kicked off in 2012 and connects Sandton to Pretoria, plus a few scenic train rides around Cape Town, I didn’t rely much on it back home.
But oh, Austria! I just wanted to tell you about the public transport here. Trains, trams, buses – you name it, they’ve got it, and it’s all seamlessly connected. After dealing with long commutes and endless traffic jams, Austria’s efficient system feels like a breath of fresh air. Picture this: landing at Vienna Airport with the whole family in tow, luggage and all, and hopping onto a train bound for home in the countryside. It’s the stuff of dreams, I tell you. How could we not fall head over heels for that kind of convenience?
7. Public Service. A Commitment to Excellence
Let me tell you about Austria’s hospitality. It goes above and beyond anything I’ve ever experienced. Whether dining in a cosy cafe or dealing with paperwork at a government office, you can expect top-notch service and genuine warmth every step of the way. I’ve been genuinely amazed at how smoothly and efficiently things run here. It’s been a delightful surprise and nothing short of exceptional treatment.
8. Health Care: Accessible and High-Quality
Austria’s healthcare system is renowned for its accessibility and exceptional care, accessible to all legal residents regardless of age or income. It’s universal healthcare at its finest. While tourists and temporary visitors can access Austrian healthcare, they usually pay the full fare. For those without employment, registering with the local labour exchange service (AMS – Arbeitsmarktservice) guarantees government coverage for insurance.
We’ve experienced this firsthand at a public hospital in Austria, where the level of professionalism exceeded our expectations. Going above and beyond isn’t the exception here; it’s the standard.
9. Safety & Security: Complete Peace of Mind
Perhaps the most significant reason why I love living in Austria, is the country’s reputation for its low crime rates and a solid commitment to public safety brings us an extra layer of comfort. Whether strolling the streets at night or uncovering hidden gems in the city, we can do so with peace of mind, fully immersing ourselves in our new environment without constantly worrying about safety. We’ve had countless evenings wandering through the countryside on warm, dusky summer nights, soaking in the scenery and breathing in the crisp mountain air. Never once have we felt unsafe. Well, except for that one time walking home from the annual Krampuslauf – every shadow seemed to hold a hint of eeriness that sent shivers down our spines. But overall, the freedom to let our children roam independently, even after dark, is the aspect of safety I cherish the most.
10. Quality of Life: A Balanced Lifestyle
Austrians are as dedicated to their quality of life as they are to finding the perfect beer! Consistently ranked among the world’s top countries for quality of life, Austria offers a standard of living that we deeply value. From streamlined public services to top-notch healthcare and education systems, Austria places a premium on the well-being of its residents, promoting a harmonious lifestyle that nurtures both personal and professional growth. It’s a well-calibrated balancing act where the appreciation for leisure and relaxation matches the dedication to hard work.
11. Central Location
Planning a getaway from Austria? Lucky you! With its central European location, Austria is the perfect springboard for exploring neighbouring countries and embarking on countless travel adventures. Surrounded by seven bordering nations, including Germany, Croatia, the Czech Republic, and Italy, crossing into a new country from Austria is as simple as pie!
12. Education in Austria
As a parent, ensuring your kids receive a quality education while still having fun is a top priority. Opting for a quieter life away from the hustle and bustle of the city, local village schools offer convenient access to free education for children. (School is compulsory and does not charge tuition fees.) Of course, attending schools in the countryside means your kids will need to pick up German and Austrian dialects, which is challenging. However, the schools provide ample support to help them navigate this linguistic journey. 13. Generous Time Off: A Complete Escape From Reality
Austria’s generous holiday allowances – I must mention this as a tremendous reason why we love living in Austria. With a two-month-long summer break for children and a generous five-week vacation time for adults, we’re genuinely spoiled for meaningful moments with our loved ones and rejuvenating breaks. When the summer heat peaks between June and September, there’s nothing more inviting than escaping to a local lake, venturing across borders to the sunny shores of Italy or Croatia, or simply lounging by the river close to home. While we’ve cherished many summers along the coasts of South Africa, there’s something truly magical about a European summer and the ample time it affords us to create memories with family.
14. On-Time & Orderly
In Austria, punctuality and orderliness aren’t just habits – they’re ingrained in the culture. Everything ticks along like a well-oiled machine, from the spotless streets to the smooth operation of public services and the comforting chimes of church bells marking the passing hours. Whether catching a train that pulls in right on schedule or navigating the impeccably organised city streets, you can feel the commitment to punctuality and orderliness in every aspect of Austrian life.
This dedication to efficiency isn’t limited to public services; it also extends to personal interactions. Austrians value punctuality and reliability in their everyday lives, personally and professionally. As a South African expat, experiencing this level of consistency and reliability has been a breath of fresh air, providing a sense of stability and reassurance in a world full of uncertainties. Everything clicks into place with such precision – it’s pretty impressive, don’t you think?
Austria is a place where dreams come true, where the magic of the mountains and the elegance of the cities intertwine to create unforgettable experiences.
